Club français: meeting minutes! 2011.10.27

The Club français held an organizational meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2011, in the French room (Rm. 125) at Spearfish HS. Present: Wade Vandine, Brianna Rommen, Shelbee Kinghorn, Amber Mohr, Kyra Nelson, Adrianna Taft, Steve Rivers, Kenzie Falk, Daniel Evans, Megan Street, Shelby Berg, Alex Jones, Justice Mack, Abigail Burnett, Katharine Hall, and Lexie Kephart.

Conversation focused on brainstorming ideas for fundraising for club activities and for the proposed student trip to France in the 2012-2013 school year. Fundraising ideas include the following:
  1. sell food at games and lunch time (Audrey and Shelby say their moms might be able to provide food)
  2. conduct raffles (one suggestion: hair styling?)
  3. craft sale
  4. Tour de France SD: benefit bicycle race around Spearfish
  5. seek sponsorships around town (consider selling ad space on club t-shirts)
  6. charge admission to French movie nights
  7. hold kids events
  8. summer car wash
  9. garage sale
  10. silent auction
  11. rent-a-Frenchie: auction off French club members as workers
  12. benefit basketball game
  13. sell cool French shirts during Homecoming
CAH said that we will first need to firm up plans for the trip so we know how much money we need to raise and when we need it by. Then we can pick and schedule some fundraising activities.

Club events: Students suggested the following club activities:
  1. Movie night
  2. pen pals
  3. crepe night
  4. tutoring (by club members, maybe even arrange meetings with M. Barnaud!)
Members decided to start club activities with a movie sometime after school in November. Students will check athletic practice schedules to find the "lull" between fall sports and winter sports when most folks could attend after school. Students suggested holding the event in the French classroom would be fine for the first movie event. Date, time, and specific title will be decided at our next meeting or via online poll!

Change of plans! We were going to hand in the "Lecture et écriture" exercises (p. 65 B and paragraph) and move on to Chapter 3. However, given difficulties with the passage, we're rescheduling!

  3. Pen Pals! CAH is currently in talks with an English teacher in France who would like her students to correspond with some English-speaking students. Correspondence with French students would be a chance for us to help them improve their English and for them to help us improve our French.
{50 minutes} Pronunciation Practice!
  • Read p. 64 out loud: first CAH demonstrates. Then we read and repeat. Then students read aloud to the class without CAH cues.
{40 minutes} Translation and Grammar!

French 2: Day 15 Lesson Plan

Bordeaux/Maroon: mercredi 5 octobre; Blanc/White: jeudi 6 octobre

DUE: Les Devoirs Write each vocab term/phrase (p. 56 "Entre Copains" and p. 73 Vocab 2) as part of a complete sentence. Then write each word/phrase again three times.

{15 minutes} Review vocab: Students read original sentences aloud!
  • First in pairs: read to each other, try to translate! (CAH checks homework during this time!)
  • Then read sentences aloud to class, CAH follows up with questions.
  • Reminder: Vocab Quiz on Day 17 (Oct 12-13)!
{30 minutes} Past/Present (pp. 58-60)
  • Change of plan! It turns out the passé composé structure (conjugate avoir + past participle) is not so familiar as we might have thought!
  • Emphasize regular forms first:
    • -er >>> -é
    • -ir >>> -i
    • -re >>> -u
  • Note irregular forms on p. 58
  • Save the être forms for next time!
Les Devoirs: Party Discussion Skit!
  • In pairs: Discuss a party! It can be a great party, a bad party, whatever way you want to take it.
  • Use the vocabulary in Chapter 2! Use this skit to review and reinforce current vocab.
  • The party under discussion can be an actual party you threw or attended. Feel free to change names to protect the innocent. The party under discussion can also be a product of your imagination.
  • You are welcome but not required to use the past tense. Whether you recount a past event or plan a future event, be consistent in tense.
  • Skits must run at least one minute long.
  • Students present skits in class on Day 17 (Oct 12-13).
  • Students also submit written scripts via Moodle on day of presentation.
