I got to wondering if I could find a list of English words that use the trema. Here are a few from Wikipedia:

Trema/Diaeresis in English!
We covered the five accent/graphical marks in French today. Le tréma (naïf, Noël, Israël, canoë, coïncider) gets me excited, because it gives me a chance to say diaeresis in class (kids remember these things!). I also dig le tréma because it appears in English as well and thus provides at least a semi-familiar example to show students the exceptional vowel pronunciation the symbol indicates. The obvious example—perhaps the only familiar example— is naïve. But I still recall reading an old edition of some novel and encountering coöoperate... or was it reëlection?

- Practice classroom vocabulary words on p. 18
- Use Il y a to say "There is/are"
- Use un/une for "a/one", des for "some"
- Each student should name four things in the classroom
- Practice first in groups of four: help each other! Listen for pronunciation, proper word choice.
- Then practice out loud en masse.
- Il y en a deux = There are two of them.
- Il n'y en a pas = There aren't any of them.
- First some en masse repetition
- Then more small-group practice, in fours: one student asks, Combien de bureaux/professeurs/fenêtres..., next student replies, Il y en a # or Il n'y en a pas.
- Bring back to main group, ask some individuals questions with p. 19 ex. 27 questions.

Les nouveaux mots -- les sports!
In French 2 today, we practiced some French phrases for various activities. We were doing sports: jouer au tennis, au basket-ball, au volley/volleyball, football, au football américain, au golf.... I added faire du cross, knowing it's fall and we have runners (and also wanting to recall my own glory days on the dusty roads of Lake County). We had other pastimes available as well: faire du théâtre, jouer de la musique, faire de la photo, aller au café
We made the rounds with "Qu'est-ce que tu aimes faire?" adding extravagant gestures to help memory and keep the blood pumping. Then I turned to a boy who caught me unprepared. "Wrestling."
Arrgghh! I hadn't looked that up! Shame on me. We looked it up and found la lutte. Now try coming up with a gesture demonstrate that!
