{30 minutes} Warm-up: Practice the upcoming oral interview quiz questions!

  • We will do this quiz in class next meeting (Oct. 18-19).

{30 minutes} More past tense work!
  • Students put some être past tense forms from les devoirs on the board.
  • Check subject-participle agreement! Emphasize this only happens with the être forms!
  • Go over the irregular forms on p. 58
  • Work in pairs to translate the following sentences:
    1. I knew the teacher.
    2. The girls came to the party.
    3. Did you want a cookie?
    4. We took a photo.
    5. Bob went to the store.
    6. Julie waited.
    7. It rained.
    8. The boys stayed at school.
    9. Marie sang.
    10. The dog died!
  • Review these sentences out loud!
Les Devoirs: Write ten original sentences in the past tense, each using a different verb. Five should come from the list of irregular verbs on p. 58 (each takes avoir to form the passé composé); five should come from the verbs listed on p. 60 (each one takes être to form the passé composé!):

  • I will start calling students out to the hall on Day 19 in an order assigned by me. Students must be prepared to respond in French to the following five questions:
  1. Ça va?
  2. Quelle est ta fête préférée? (Holiday)
  3. Pourquoi est-ce que tu aimes mieux ___ (response from #2)?
  4. Qu'est-ce que je pourrais offrir à ma femme pour sa anniversaire?

  • You must then ask me one comprehensible question in French! (You cannot use Ça va?!)
{20 minutes} Passé composé avec être: Past tense using être!
  • Note verb forms on p. 60 that use être instead of avoir to form the past tense.
  • Note that most of these verbs are verbs of motion!
  • Note also that we have to make them agree with the subject

  • Students work in pairs or trios.
  • One student plays a journalist; other student plays a famous person of some sort (une vedette, une personne célèbrée/fameuse)
  • In trios, one journalist and two famous people.
  • Journalist introduces star to us and asks five questions about activities the famous person enjoys; famous person responds appropriately with complete sentences (not just oui or non)
  • In trio, journalist asks each star five questions; may turn to the second star and simply ask, "Et vous?"
  • Script must include the words régulièrement, souvent, de temps en temps, rarement, and jamais.
  • Present in class next time!
  • Also submit presentation script via Moodle!
Remainder of class time: write up and practice star interviews!

French 1: Day 16 Lesson Plan (Oct 7-11)

  • Students pair up, ask each other these questions, and prepare dialogues using each:
    1. Student A: "Tu préfères/aimes mieux...?"
    2. Student B: "J'aime... mais je préfère/aime mieux.... Et quelle sont tes activités préférées?"
    3. Student A: "J'aime/Je préfère...."

  • In pairs: Discuss a party! It can be a great party, a bad party, real party, imaginary party, whatever way you want to take it.
  • Use the vocabulary in Chapter 2! Use this skit to review and reinforce current vocab.
  • You are welcome but not required to use the past tense. Whether you recount a past event or plan a future event, be consistent in tense.
  • Skits must run at least one minute long.

French 2: Day 15 Lesson Plan

Bordeaux/Maroon: mercredi 5 octobre; Blanc/White: jeudi 6 octobre

DUE: Les Devoirs Write each vocab term/phrase (p. 56 "Entre Copains" and p. 73 Vocab 2) as part of a complete sentence. Then write each word/phrase again three times.

{15 minutes} Review vocab: Students read original sentences aloud!
  • First in pairs: read to each other, try to translate! (CAH checks homework during this time!)
  • Then read sentences aloud to class, CAH follows up with questions.
  • Reminder: Vocab Quiz on Day 17 (Oct 12-13)!
{30 minutes} Past/Present (pp. 58-60)
  • Change of plan! It turns out the passé composé structure (conjugate avoir + past participle) is not so familiar as we might have thought!
  • Emphasize regular forms first:
    • -er >>> -é
    • -ir >>> -i
    • -re >>> -u
  • Note irregular forms on p. 58
  • Save the être forms for next time!
Les Devoirs: Party Discussion Skit!
  • In pairs: Discuss a party! It can be a great party, a bad party, whatever way you want to take it.
  • Use the vocabulary in Chapter 2! Use this skit to review and reinforce current vocab.
  • The party under discussion can be an actual party you threw or attended. Feel free to change names to protect the innocent. The party under discussion can also be a product of your imagination.
  • You are welcome but not required to use the past tense. Whether you recount a past event or plan a future event, be consistent in tense.
  • Skits must run at least one minute long.
  • Students present skits in class on Day 17 (Oct 12-13).
  • Students also submit written scripts via Moodle on day of presentation.
