French 2: Thursday April 18 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs!

1. Study for Vocab Quiz 10.1 (pp. 346–348 + countries on page R21!) jeudi, la prochaine fois! And remember, the quiz section covering the countries will be different from the norm: I will give you a map, and you will have to label the countries from this list in French!
2. Write 20 original sentences in the future tense—i.e., saying somebody will do something!

• Ten sentences must use je as the subject (I will...).
• Ten sentences must use a different subject.
• Every sentence must use a different verb! (I would suggest starting with the Chapter 7 Vocab List on p. 265, using all the verbs there, then working backwards through our other vocab lists!)

• Each student reads a sentence from his/her original homework; next student translates that sentence.

Les Devoirs: Handwrite each vocab word/phrase four times.

French 2: Tuesday April 16 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: Geographical Vocabulary/Grammar Practice! [Juniors gone last Friday for D-STEP are exempt from this assignment.]

1. Pick ten countries from Vocab List 10.1 (don't forget the extra countries on page R21!).
2. Grab a world map (without any labels on it!) from the Web and hand-label (i.e., use your pen/stylus) the ten countries you have chosen with their names in the French spelling.
3. Along with those labels, write a sentence for each country saying what you will do (future tense!) in that country.

[10 minutes] Speaking Practice: students partner up, read each other their travel stories, partners translate out loud back to English.

[20 minutes] Pratiquons la géographie!

• Students go to SmartBoard with partners. One reads sentences, other points to and labels countries on world map (see also this version) as student reads.

[25 minutes] Grammar Practice: Future Tense! Translate the following sentences into French (we'll go over them together in class today!):

1. I will speak with the English girls.
2. Will you finish your conversation with the German boys?
3. The Italian boy will go to summer camp.
4. We will see the Portuguese women.
5. Will you travel abroad this summer?
6. The Italian ladies will do some windsurfing.
7. I will go hiking.
8. Will you take a guided tour in New Zealand?
9. The Spanish guy will go mountain-climbing in Switzerland.
10. We will visit Russia.
11. Will you be in Norway in June?
12. My friends will visit their grandmother in Brazil by boat.

[10 minutes] Grammar Review: Read homework sentences aloud, focus on correct endings

[30 minutes] Slightly New Grammar: Irregular Future Forms (p. 252)

• Various French verbs, like those listed on p. 252, have irregular future stems.
• Practice irregular forms (see online flashcards here, a list here, another list here)
• Irregularity in the present (boire, dire, mettre) does not guarantee irregularity in the future... but most verbs that do something freaky in the future also do something freaky in the present.
• Practice with p. 252 and 253 Exercises #30, 31, 32.

French 3: Tuesday April 16 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: Write all Vocab 7.1 words and phrases, including Exprimons-nous, four times.

[25 minutes] Oral Vocab Practice!

• First CAH leads écoutez et répétez (we didn't do this last time!)
• Then students practice in pairs for five minutes while CAH checks homework.
• Questions: Quel est pire/plus mal/plus terrible...? Quel phénomène naturel as-tu vu? Que fait ce phénomène?

[25 minutes] Written Vocab Practice!

• Students write out pp. 278–279 Exs. 1, 2, 3, & 4!
• Go over answers ensemble

[30 minutes] Reading Practice: Les nouvelles!

• Lisez et traduisez ensemble de la tempête de neige en mars en Normandie.

Les Devoirs: Reading and translating the news!

1. Due jeudi: Find one news article in French about a recent (since 1 janvier 2012) natural phenomenon. 
2. Due jeudi: Put a link to that article on the Shared Google Doc.
3. Due jeudi: Transcribe (rewrite on a separate sheet) and translate at least the first 200 words of your article. Use the column format: français à gauche, anglais à droite.
4. Due lundi: Prepare a TV news version of this news report! Prepare a slide show that includes at the very least a map (with French labels!) of where the phenomenon happened, plus 60 seconds of you oral reportage (in French) of the event!

French 1: Monday April 15 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs! Translate the following sentences, paying close attention to proper use of interrogative (quel!) and demonstrative (ce!) pronouns:

[25 minutes] Introduce last new vocab list! 7.2! 

• pp. 234–235 (note the difference between la bague et l'anneau!)
• p. 236 (mille et million... but note the big discussion of milliard and billion)
• p. 237 Exprimons-nous.

Les Devoirs: Write all vocab terms covered on pp. 234–237...

• ...if the vocab words are pictured on pp. 234–235, write them three times and draw a picture to accompany the word!

French 2: Monday April 8 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs! Write all vocab words, phrases, and place names on pp. 346–348 and country names on p. R21 four times.

[40 minutes] Vocabulary Practice!

• Students practice listening and pronunciation of words in pairs (CAH checks homework during this time).
• CAH drills students on countries first. Practice with "tu as visité... tu veux visité...?"
• Drill remaining vocab together. Note masculine/feminine differences in nationality adjectives.
• Written practice: do p. 348 Exs. 2 and 3.

[40 minutes] New Grammar: Future Tense! pp. 250 and 252

• Easier than past tense, harder than imperfective!
• New endings: -ai, as, -a, ons, -ez, -ont
• Basic stems: use infinitive of -er and -ir verbs; use infinitive of -re verbs minus the -e.
• Note irregulars on p. 252

Les Devoirs: pp. 250–251 Exs. 26, 27, and 28. (Yes, as usual, write out the complete sentences.)

French 1: Thursday April 11 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE:

1. Do p. 229 Exs. 14 & 15. (As always, write complete sentences!)
2. Write descriptions of two ideal outfits, two outfits that you like to wear.
• Each outfit must include five items of clothing from Vocab List 7.1.
• You must describe each item of clothing with an adjective.
• Each outfit must go with a different season.
• Use phrases like Je porte..., je voudrais porter....

[10 minutes] Vocab/Grammar warm-up! Translate the following commands, using imperative forms of porter:

1. Wear your jeans! (tu)
2. Wear your suit! (vous)
3. Let's wear our boots!
4. Wear your scarf! (tu)
5. Wear your sunglasses! (vous)
6. Let's wear our parkas!

• All students write down translations; then pick six to write translations au tableau.
• CAH checks homework during this time.

[20 minutes] Oral conversation practice: Students read their outfit sentences aloud; CAH asks questions, students respond.

[20 minutes] Grammar review: interrogative adjectives (quel): Students read p. 229 Exs. 14 & 15 aloud, compare sentences.

[20 minutes] Oral grammar practice with ce and quel:

• CAH asks Quel/Quelle/Quels/Quelles ___ préfères-tu?
• Students respond Je préfère ce/cet/cette/ces ____.
• At halfway mark, switch order! Let students ask me quel.

Les Devoirs: 

1. Étudiez comme fous pour l'examen de vocabulaire 7.1, pp. 222–225 lundi, le 15 avril!
2. Then translate the following sentences:
