  • Write five sentences, one with each of the following verbs, in the past tense: aider, acheter, essayer, porter, trouver.
  • Use 7.2 Vocab words in at least ten of your sentences and highlight those vocab words!

  • CAH assigns students to three or four groups (no fewer than four students per group).
  • Students play memory game: first says, "À la grande surface, j'ai acheté..." plus one of our vocab words. Student should say the vocab word loudly and clearly and make some physical gesture indicating what the item is. 
  • Next student says, "À la grande surface, j'ai acheté..." plus the item the first student says, plus a new item, and so on. See how far each group can go by memory!
  • CAH checks homework during this time.
  • Each group recognizes the person who can recall the longest list of items; CAH stages a champions round among those top memorizers in front of class.

Final Exam Schedule

Assuming that the board approves moving your last day of class to May 24, here is the snow-revised schedule for the final week of school and final exams:

  • Monday, May 20 will be a normal Maroon day. French 3 and French 2 will enjoy their final review in class.
  • Tuesday, May 21 will be a normal White day. French 1 will enjoy their final review in class.
  • Wednesday, May 22: Maroon 1, 2, and 3 (French 3 and French 2) exams happen at normal class times. 
  • Thursday, May 23: White 1 exams happen during Block 2; White 2 (French 1) exams happen during Block 3.
  • Friday, May 24: White 3 (French 1) exams happen during Block 1; White 4 (French 1) exams happen during Block 2. 
  • You will check-in your laptops after your White 4 exam on Friday, May 24.
CAH will post oral exam questions and practice videos by Wednesday, May 1. CAH will begin offering French oral exams by appointment on Tuesday, May 14. CAH will offer oral exam times through Thursday, May 23. CAH will schedule no oral exams on Friday, May 24.

For each verb, write two original sentences, one saying someone is doing the action (present tense), another saying that same person did the action yesterday (past tense). Use a different subject for each verb. Also include some phrase (direct object, prepositional phrase. In all, you will write nine pairs of sentences, eighteen sentences total.

For example, suppose you have the verb chanter. I want to see two sentences, present and past:
  1. Nous chantons l'hymne nationale au match de basketball.
  2. Nous avons chanté l'hymne nationale au match de basketball.
[10 minutes] Les phrases au tableau! Students write two of their past tense sentences on the board.
  • CAH checks homework for points during this time!
[15 minutes] Oral Vocab Practice: "Qu'est-ce que tu voudrais pour ton anniversaire?" CAH gets question rolling, then students ask each other. Respond using vocab in 7.2 list!

[20 minutes] Review Past Tense -er verbs! Check homework sentences on board. Make sure everyone is using the helping verb-past participle combo!

[30 minutes] Expanding passé composé grammar: -ir and -re verbs! p. 262!
  • Verbs like finir and vendre follow the same helping verb rule as verbs like manger and regarder: conjugate avoir!
  • ...but their past participles have different endings! -ir drop the -r and leave the ending -i; -re verbs drop the -re and add -u!

    • Each outfit must include five items of clothing from Vocab List 7.1.
    • You must describe each item of clothing with an adjective.

[10 minutes] Vocab/Grammar warm-up! Translate the following commands, using imperative forms of porter:

[20 minutes] Verb Tense Practice! Everybody write the ils/elles form of an -ir verb on the board in the six big tenses (present, past, imperfect, future, conditional, subjunctive) and the present participle. Plus, write one sentence using one of those forms and be ready to translate it!

  • Students present with poster on board but with no notes!

  • quel = which? what? or what!

[45 minutes] L'examen de grammaire: Imparfait et Passé Composé! (Grammar Quiz: Imperfect and Past Tense)
  • CAH will give you several subject-verb phrases and sentences in English. They will be in the imperfect (was doing/happening) and past tense (did/happened). You'll need to translate them into French, paying close attention to the proper verb tense.
  • Expect examples to include irregular past participles (esp. forms listed on p. 58), past tense forms that take être instead of avoir (see pp. 60 and 174), and the one verb in the entire French language that forms its imperfective irregularly (p. 198).
  • CAH may also throw in a couple present tense forms, just to make sure you are paying attention.
[30 minutes] Introduce new Vocabulary List 10.1!
  • Practice vocab on pp. 346–348, plus country names on p. R21!
  • Students should expect a vocab quiz that, contrary to past practice, will require them to write the French versions of the place names instead of just recognizing the sound of the French names and translating them to English.

    • But watch out! This rule does not mean that you always use cet with masculine nouns that start with vowels! You say cet homme, but if an adjective intervenes, and that adjective starts with a consonant, cet goes back to cece grand hommeAnd if you have a noun that starts with a consonant but then stick an adjective that starts with a vowel in front of it, ce becomes cet: cet ancien médecin.
