plus: When to Pronounce the S

I was looking up the e-mail closing expression À+ when I noticed a discussant's mention of the fact that, when saying à plus, one should pronounce the ending s. Really?

Yes, really:

A note on pronunciation: plus/le plus used in comparison (meaning more/the most) is pronounced [ply] before a consonant and [plyz] before a vowel. It is pronounced [plys] when at the end of a clause. In the plus de and plus que structures both [ply] and [plys] are generally used. plus used in ne plus (meaning no longer/not any more) is always pronounced [ply] except before a vowel, in which case it is pronounced [plyz]: il n'habite plus ici [plyzisi] [WordReference.com: French-English Dictionary entry for plus].

So if you are saying, "À plus!" to a friend, that plus is indeed at the end of your clause, and you do indeed say it.

One also pronounces the s on plus when using the word as a noun for the addition sign or for an advantage:

1. Le professeur a oublié le signe plus dans la formule; ainsi, il a prouvé, que la terre est plat.
   
2. Un jour de neige? C'est un plus pour les élèves qui n'ont pas fini les devoirs!

• Note that the ending "A+" is a common e-mail abbreviation for à plus tard. Arguably, one could put an accent mark over the A: À+
  

{40 minutes} Verb conjugation practice! In class, students pair up and translate the following 20 sentences.

• Divide the work! Have one student translate the first half in bold, the subject and verb, while the other student translates the rest of the predicate! Then combine the sentence parts and practice saying them when finished.
  

1. I prefer pencils.
2. Augustina prefers pens.
3. Do you (plural) prefer the paper or the computer?
4. The students repeat the sentences.
5. We repeat the words.
6. Are you (singular) rehearsing Romeo and Juliet?
7. Mom is walking the dog.

{15 minutes} Adjectives as nouns! p. 130

• If we understand what noun we're talking about, we can drop it and just use the proper article and adjective that describes it.
• Make sure articles and adjectives still reflect the gender!
• la bleue: "the blue one" (some feminine noun!)
• le vert: "the green one" (some masculine noun!)
• les blanches: "the white ones" (referring to multiple feminine nouns)
• les rouges: "the red ones" (referring to multiple nouns... can't tell whether feminine or masculine, since rouge has an -e on the end in both genders)
• Practice with p. 130, Ex. 32

{45 minutes} How-to Presentations!

• Students should pair up and prepare presentations based on their "How-To" paragraphs submitted Friday.
• Each pair will present one How-To Skit! Instead of each student reading his/her own paragraph separately, each pair will pick and choose from both of their paragraphs to make one presentation.
• One student will read the text while the other student will listen and patiently, slowly demonstrate the actions on the Smart Board. (Think ahead about what windows you'll open, when you'll need to access the keyboard, etc.: I'll give you time to practice on Tuesday before your presentations.)
• Presentation should last a couple minutes.
• CAH will score presentations based on Pronunciation (speak up! use that French accent!), Information (can listeners get the gist?), and Grammar (say it correctly!)
