French 1: Wed/Thu September 5-6 Lesson Plan

DUE: pp. 6-8: Write each phrase in each dialogue bubble in French, then in English, then again in French.

[10 minutes] Review numbers and greetings.

[10 minutes] Students practice reading Vocab bubbles to each other; practice with at least three different partners, doing each side of the conversation in each pairing.

[15 minutes] Connect students to Google Docs Vocab Sheets!

• Students type e-mail username on shared sheet; CAH uses this text document to generate invites and open Google Doc Homegrown Vocab spreadsheet to students.

• Interview six classmates in French, find out their age, write down how old they are (in complete sentences, writing out the numbers as words!
• [added Sept 6! Maroon 2 students may complete this task by Tues., Sept 11] Add your ten words from the first vocab lookup assignment to the Homegrown Vocab list on Google Docs. Include English word, French word (with special characters!), your name and section (M2, W2, W4), and any useful notes.

French 2: Wednesday, September 5 Lesson Plan

DUE: Write all words in Vocab List 1.1 four times!

[15 minutes]: Vocab practice! Tell each other about your families!

• Students pair up, tell each other about family members.
• Pay attention! Take notes!

[15 minutes] Oral Presentation: Students tell the class about their partners' families; listeners recount details!

[15 minutes] Grammar Practice: avoir and être

• Quick oral practice: do Exercise 7 together out loud
• Students write out Exercises 6 & 8; read answers together in class

[20 minutes] Adjective Agreement (p. 12)

• Recall the basic rules: masculine form is the base; feminine usually adds -e; plural usually adds -s
• Do Exs. 11 and 12 together

Les Devoirs: Write out complete sentences and answers for p. 13, Exs. 13 and 14.

French 3: Tuesday, September 4 Lesson Plan

DUE: First presentation!

• Prepare to speak to the class in French for 60 seconds.
• Tell us what you did this summer.
• Speak without notes.
• Your time does not include pauses, whether vocalized (um... uh... I don't know what to say!) or not.

[15 minutes] Practice... and get textbooks!

• Students trio up, deliver their one-minute presentations to each other twice.
• Students establish a speaking order on board.
• During this practice, students should check out French 3 textbooks.

[25 minutes] Presentations: Ce que j'ai fait en été!

• Students speak!
• After each presentation students answers one question from next speaker and one question from le prof. 

[20 minutes] Grammar Review: Regular Verbs! (pp. 10-11)

• Review conjugation chart on p. 10
• Write conjugations for étudier, finir, perdre
• Do Exs. 8, 9, and 10 together in class

[15 minutes] New Vocabulary (mostly review!) 1.1

• Students read pp. 6-7 aloud to themselves first.
• Then we read and repeat for pronunciation practice.
• Note use of on for one or we.

Les Devoirs: Write three times...

French 1: August 31/September 4, 2012

DUE: First Ten Vocab Words!

• Think of ten words you'd want to know how to say in French
• Look them up on WordReference.com
• Write down each English word, then write its French translation four times!

[20 minutes] Review greetings:

• Bonjour! 
• Comment tu t’appelles? 
• Je m'appelle....
• Enchanté(e).
• [add for Jour Blanc!] Comment ça va/Ça va bien?

• While CAH checks vocab and logs book numbers, students begin looking at Chapter 1 vocab.

DUE: Les Devoirs! First presentation!

• Prepare to speak to the class in French for 30 seconds.
• Talking about yourself and your summer is likely the easiest route, but you may choose other appropriate topics that you can handle with your current French vocabulary.
• You will speak without notes.

[5 minutes] Pratiquez! Students trio up, deliver own presentation twice, listen to partners do same, offer questions/suggestions/corrections.

[25 minutes] 30-second presentations

• After each presentation, next speaker asks presenter one question; speaker must offer answer in French. (First speaker asks question of last speaker.) Then TA asks a question, speaker must answer!

[10 minutes] Hand out textbooks, log book numbers, make PDF textbook available!

[10 minutes] Pronunciation and Vocab: New Vocab List 1.1 (p.37)

• TA leads in pronunciation practice!

[15 minutes] Grammar Review: avoir et être (p.10) 

• Know your conjugations!
• Know how to negate (ne + verb + pas).
• Know how to ask questions (Est-ce que + sentence).
• Oral practice: pp. 10–11, ex. 6–8
