French 3: Tuesday September 18 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs! (Originally assigned for last meeting, 9/14; carried over to today after change of plan!)

1. Écrivez des phrases pour p. 31, Ex. 31.
2. Écrivez 10 phrases originaux: 5 qui dit ce que vous faites aujourd'hui (en présent!), et 5 qui dit, que vous avez fait les mêmes choses hier (passé composé!).

[20 minutes] Vocab Quiz 1.2: pp. 18–21, incluant Exprimons-nous, D'autres mots utiles, et Entre copains!

[10 minutes] Reading and listening practice!

1. Students pair up, read each other their original sentences. Readers, speak clearly, because...
2. ...listeners translate the sentences into English without looking at the papers!
3. CAH checks homework at this time.

[10 minutes] Passé Composé Practice

• Students each pick one present/past pair of sentences from their writing to write on Smart Board.
• Compare present and past conjugations
• Watch for avoir vs. être as helping verb
• Watch for irregular participles
• Watch for placement of reflexive pronouns

[40 minutes] Grammar Review: l'imparfait! p. 24

• Remember this? The imperfect is that verb form that says you used to do something, or that you were doing something.
• The formation is easy: take the present nous form of the verb, drop -ons, and add the proper imperfect ending (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient).
• The only exception: être, whose imperfect stem is ét- (because the nous form of the verb, sommes, doesn't have an -ons to cut off!).
• CAH shows uses of imperfect on board.
• Do pp. 24-25, Exs. 34 & 35 together.
• Every student writes three sentence triplets: three sentences in present, then versions of those three sentences in in passé composé and in imperfect. Put triplets on Smart Board!

Les Devoirs: Expand the in-class verb grammar practice by writing five present-past-imperfect triplets. Par exemple:

• Je détruis l'Étoile de la Mort.
• J'ai détruit l'Étoile de la Mort.
• Je détruisais l'Étoile de la Mort.

French 2: Monday September 17 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: pp. 22-23, Exs. 27 & 28

[10 minutes] Review -er verbs

• Students trio up: one student reads sentence from Ex. 27 or Ex. 28, second student translates into English, third student listens and corrects if necessary. Rotate reading, allowing each student chance to read each of his/her sentences aloud and to translate others' sentences.
• CAH checks homework at this time.

[25 minutes] Oral Vocab and Grammar Review

• p. 23, Ex. 29: Do it live!
• Imaginez: Vous apprenez à connaître un nouveau correspondant français. Dites-lui un peu de vous-même, vos activités préférées, et quand vous faites ces activités.
• Work in groups of five; CAH/TA circulate, listen, help!
• One student speaks; others in groups take turns translating sentences.
• Each student must say at least five sentences.
• Try to use this week's vocab in each sentence (especially with the quand phrases, like how many times a week you do something, or on what days, or in which seasons!).

[30 minutes] More Verb conjugation review! -re and -ir verbs! p. 24

• -re verb endings: j'attends, tu attends, elle attend, nous attendons, vous attendez, elles attendent
• -re verbs really aren't much different from -er verbs: the je and elle forms differ, but the other forms (the 2, 4, 5, & 6) drop the infinitive ending and add the same suffixes.
• -ir verbs get freaky in the plural: je finis, tu finis, elle finit, nous finissons, vous finissez, elles finissent
• Note that in all of these conjugations, the third-person plural (the 6, the elles form) uses the silent -ent. Don't say the -ent! Ever!!!
• Practice online with Tex! Do -re verb practice and -ir verb practice.

French 1: Thu/Fri September 13-14 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: Write all vocab on pp. 18 and 20 (including Exprimons-nous!) three times.

[15 minutes] Practice French Alphabet

• Correct pronunciation of e! More like in le, de, and je!

• Students practice in pairs, CAH hears each student do alphabet
• Alphabet oral quiz next class period!

[30 minutes] Practice New Vocab!

• CAH reads, students repeat
• Practice with touchez et montrez!
• Students practice pronunciation in pairs; CAH checks homework for completeness.
• Students practice commands: each student picks and gives a command, everyone else acts it out.

[20 minutes] Accent marks!

French 2: Thursday September 13 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: Write all Vocab 1.2 words, including pix, D'autres mots utiles, Exprimons-nous, and Entre copains, four times!

[15 minutes] Practice Pronunciation!

• Students drill each other on vocab pronunciation
• CAH checks homework for completion

[25 minutes] Vocab Practice!

• Do p. 20 Exs. 23, 22 and 24 together: start with Ex. 23 listening exercise first, then have students write out Exs. 22 and 24.
• Each student takes a crack at p. 21 Ex. 25: compose one logical sentence using the phrases given in the columns.

[25 minutes] Review -er verbs! p. 22

• Recall the basic endings: -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez, -ent
• Remember the rather unexciting fact that the 1, 2, 3, and 6 (the je, tu, il, and ils forms) are all pronounced the same.
• Each student finds three -er verbs, writes conjugation.
• Each student says conjugation out loud! If preceding student says your verb, you have to find another one!

French 3: Friday September 14 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: assignment moved to mardi, le 19 septembre! We totally changed the plan!

[80 minutes] Real French News!

• Objectives: 
  1. practice translation (use of cognates and context)
  2. develop vocabulary
  3. reinforce grammar (suffixes, roots)
  4. discuss geography, culture and history (French and world!)
• Text: "Jour de colère dans le monde musulman," Le Monde, 14 septembre 2012
• Feature article on Smart Board.
• Students collaborate to translate article paragraph by paragraph.
• If this lesson works, we may do it more frequently with other articles!

French 3: Wednesday September 12 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs!

• Read, write out in French, and translate la carte postale de Damien (p. 18). Write the translation side-by-side with the French transcript.
• Write the vocab words on p. 19, 20, and 21 three times (including D'autres mots utiles, Entre copains, and Exprimons-nous).

[20 minutes] Practice Reading and Listening

• Students practice reading "Une carte postale de Damien" out loud in pairs! Read as if really speaking to someone, not just reciting book text (CAH models at start!); listen closely to partner.
• CAH checks vocab homework during this time.
• Students then read postcard aloud in class

[30 minutes] Vocab Practice

• CAH leads read-and-repeat of highlighted terms
• CAH highlights la cambrousse (the sticks!), prendre un pot (vs. avoir du pot!) and se rappeler ("recall")
• Do p. Exs 24, 25, and 26 together (complete Ex. 26 on shared Google Doc on Tableau Intelligent!)

[30 minutes] Grammar Review: passé composé! p. 22

• Remember the rules!

1. Most of the time, form past tense by conjugating avoir as helping verb, then using past participle of main verb.
• j'ai mangé
• tu as fini
• elle a attendu...
2. With verbs of motion/transition (online practice here!) and reflexive verbs, conjugate être as helping, and make the past participle agree in number and gender with the subject.
• nous sommes allés
• vous êtes arrivés
• elles sont sorties
• je me suis brossé les dents
• tu t'es couchée
• il s'est lavé
3. Watch for irregular past participles! (see table on p. 22, or this really big list... or, if in doubt, punch your verb into WordReference.com's mighty verb conjugator)

• Do pp. 22-23 Exs. 29 & 30 together (Ex. 30 on white board)
