Results of French 2 and French 3 Vocab Surveys

Here the Chapter Vocab lists we will cover in French 3 and in French 2, as determined by student vote in our Vocab Surveys:

French 3:

1. Chapter 5: wild animals and extreme sports
2. Chapter 9: visual and performing arts
3. Chapter 7: natural disasters and environmental issues
4. Chapter 10: traveling by airplane and automobile
5. Chapter 6: French news/newspapers
6. Chapter 8: elections and public services

French 2:

1. Chapter 9: Movies, TV, books, music 
2. Chapter 7: Camping, fishing, the outdoors
3. Chapter 10: Vacations, traveling
4. Chapter 8: Body parts + exercise and health
5. Chapter 6: Things you did in your childhood + Life in the country

In both French 3 and French 2, we will very likely be able to cover the top three chapters chosen. It is possible that we will reach the fourth chapter on each list, but nothing beyond. So French 3, you are safe from news and elections, and French 2, you will be spared the angst of revisiting your childhood.

Note that CAH will pick and chose grammar lessons from all appropriate chapters, independent of the rankings above, to ensure your smooth progress in learning French grammar.

French 2: Monday February 11 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: 

1. Write out sentences responding to each of the oral commands on the Chapter 5 Oral Quiz by saying (in French), "I already did that."
2. Théâtre de l'imperatif réflexif absurde! Do it/Don't do it skits!

• Compose a brief absurdist skit using reflexive commands:
  • 1: "Do A!"
  • 3: "Don't do A; do B!"
  • 1: "Don't do B; do C!"
  • 3: "Don't do C: do D!"
  • 1: "Don't do D; do E!"
  • 3: "Don't do E; do F!"
  • 1: "Don't do F!"
  • 2: "Hey, let's do G!"
  • 1 & 3: "O.K.!"
• #2 acts out all of the commands given by #1 and #3.
• #1 and #3 join #2 in doing what #2 suggests at the end.
• You conduct this conversation in French, of course.
• Prepare this skit to present in class next time!
• No notes!

[5 minutes] Warm up for Skits!

• CAH checks homework during this time.

[15 minutes] Absurdist skits!

• CAH grades on alignment of commands and actions, pronunciation.

[30 minutes] Oral Quiz Practice!

• First, students practice oral quiz questions face to face: students move around room, first five minutes asking each other what they did last night/this morning; then second five minutes giving the commands and responding physically.
• Then CAH drills the entire room on the commands, then asks students individually the last night/this morning questions.
• Then students ask CAH questions!

[40 minutes] Grammar Review! (pp. 162, 164, 174, 176)

• First drill the tout/toute/tous/toutes forms in written drill.
• Then practice reflexive verbs au tableau!

Les Devoirs: rien... but come prepared to ace both the Chapter 5 Grammar Quiz (reflexive verbs in present, past, and imperative; forms of tout) and the Chapter 5 Oral Quiz on Wednesday!

French 3: Monday February 11 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs! Complete translation of one randomly assigned page (pp. 170–179)

1. Students must read, transcribe, and translate their given page... in that order! First read it twice, silently then aloud. Then transcribe the French on the left half of a blank document. Then work up a translation of that text on the right half, trying to keep French-English translations side by side.
2. Translate the words you know first; leave blanks for what you don't know, grind through that material with the dictionary after doing as much as you can with your own brain first.
3. For Pete's sake, don't use Google Translate! Use the glossary, Larousse, WordReference.com, but no service where you type in entire sentences or paragraphs and get machine translations.

[20 minutes] Reading and Translating in pairs!

• Students pair up, read each other their pages in French, then their translations, check each other's work!
• CAH checks homework, answers questions during this time.

[40 minutes] Reading aloud! Students read their pages aloud, then their translations.

[10 minutes] Verb Practice: au tableau! Students practice our five verb tenses (present, past, imperfect, future, and conditional) with verbs of their choosing.

Les Devoirs: Write 15 original sentences using the verbs savoir, pouvoir, devoir, vouloir, and voir. Write the sentences in this order:

• 3 in present
• 3 in passé composé
• 3 in imperfect
• 3 in future
• 3 in conditional

French 1: Friday February 8 2013 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: Vocab Writing Practice! Write all 5.2 vocab listed above four times.

[5 minutes] Oral Warm-up! Weather Conversations!

• Students go around room asking everyone else, "Quel temps fait-il?"
• Each student responds with one of the weather phrases on p. 163.
• The student who asks must respond by acting out that weather (shivering for froid, blowing away for du vent, etc.)
• CAH checks homework during this time.

[15 minutes] More Oral Practice: Where are you going?

• CAH/TA lead by asking "Où vas-tu?"
• Students respond with one of the destinations in our vocab.
• Each student must give a destination different from previous student's response.
• After one round, we circulate again, asking same question, same answer allowed. But now we follow up with "Et s'il fait..." some weather condition that might hinder that plan.
• Students then must follow-up with a back-up plan.

[10 minutes] Writing Practice: Do p. 164 Exs. 21 and 22 au tableau.

[10 minutes] Avoir idioms (p. 170)

• CAH/TA ask "Ça va?"
• Students respond with avoir idioms (p. 170) and act them out!

[35 minutes] aller and the futur proche (future tense!) p. 166

• Review aller conjugation
• Flesh out futur proche as quick and dirty future tense!
• Show parallel to English "I'm going to do something."
• Practice with pp. 166–167 Exs. 27, 28, and 29 writing at desks, then writing answers au tableau.

Les Devoirs: Travel slideshow! Present a slideshow depicting your ideal travel itinerary for the year... tout en français!. Minimum six slides:

1. First slide: Your name, plus a title.
2. Second slide: Spring destination, weather, and two activities
3. Third slide: Summer destination, weather, and two activities
4. Fourth slide: Fall destination, weather, and two activities
5. Fifth slide: Winter destination, weather, and two activities
6. Sixth slide: Summary of trip

• All slides must have images and French text (at least five words, but no more than ten)!
• When you talk about talk about the weather and the activities you are going to do, phrase them in the futur proche (p. 166): e.g., for your summer trip, you may say, Il va faire beau. Nous allons aller à la plage (allons aller means "we're going to go"). For your winter trip, you may say Il va neiger (note use of infinitive form neiger instead of conjugated for neige). Nous allons faire du snowboard.
• DUE next time, Feb. 12: text of slides.
• DUE time after that, Feb. 14: slides to present in class!

• Reflexive Passé Composé: What did you do last night/this morning?

• CAH practices with large group, then students circulate to practice with each other.

• Practice rules for affirmative and negative reflexive commands.
