Oral Exam
Make-Up Deadline Thursday, Feb. 2!

DUE: Les Devoirs! Original sentences using each of the nouns and adjectives on pp. 124–125.

{5 minutes} Brain warm-up in pairs!

• While CAH checks homework, students ask each other, "De quelle couleur..." about various items they have or that they see around the room. Try to ask at least one question for each color we have on the list!

{20 minutes} Review sentences on board!

• half of class goes to board to write two sentences from homework; other half follows to make corrections; then change roles!

{20 minutes} New phrases! (pp. 125–126):

• j'ai besoin de...
• il me faut/il te faut...
• tu pourrais me prêter...
• ...à me prêter...
• je cherche... (-er verb!)
• C'est combien?/Elle est à combien?
• C'est dix-huit dollars quatre-vingt-cinq.
• Elle est à dix-huit dollars quatre-vingt-cinq.
• réponse à "Merci": Je vous en prie/À votre service.

{20 minutes} Do pp. 126–127 in class

• Students get ten minutes to write out exercises, then we say them out loud together.
  

Les Devoirs: More writing!

• Write three original dialogs (minimum four sentences each), one in which you tell someone you need something and ask to borrow it, two in which you are shopping for school supplies. Use the phrases we went over today on pp. 126–127!
  
• Study for Vocab Quiz 4.2 over school supplies, colors, and numbers (be ready for multiplication!) on Tuesday, January 31.
  

French 2: Jan 20 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs!

1. Annotated screen shot: students should have an image of their computer screen annotated with French terms from p. 130!
2. "How-to" outline: Students should have at least a paragraph, written in French, telling how to use a computer to research and write a paper for school. (If students forget what they can include in their instructions, refer them to the Jan. 18 lesson plan.)
3. Teacher will note on the rosters which students have completed this assignment.

{30 minutes} Vocab Practice!

Individual Practice (20 minutes):

1. Students should log in to their "my.hrw.com" online textbooks. (Passwords are available in yellow folder.) Students go to Chapter 4 vocab so they can listen to and practice repeating the vocab words we started practicing on Tuesday.
2. Students should click on the words on the vocab list (either pp. 130-131 or p. 149), listen to the audio, and repeat the words out loud (no whispering! no mouthing the words silently! Everyone should be emitting sound!

Pairs Practice (10 minutes):

1. Students pair up! At least one student should have a computer logged on to the Web.
   
2. Students should practice telling each other to "Cliquez sur..." (click on) various items on the screen. Each student gets a chance to tell the other to do the clicking.

{60 minutes} Work on "How-To" Computer Skits!

• For next time, students should pair up and prepare presentations based on their "How-To" paragraphs submitted today.
• Each pair will present one How-To Skit! Instead of each student reading his/her own paragraph separately, each pair will pick and choose from both of their paragraphs to make one presentation.
• One student will read the text while the other student will listen and patiently, slowly demonstrate the actions on the Smart Board. (Think ahead about what windows you'll open, when you'll need to access the keyboard, etc.: I'll give you time to practice on Tuesday before your presentations.)
• Presentation should last a couple minutes.
  
• Presentations will happen Tuesday!
  

French 1: Jan. 19 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs! Math homework! Multiplication drill!

• Make a multiplication table for the numbers 5 through 15.
• Write each product in each cell in words!
• Assignment may be done either on paper or in MS Excel spreadsheet.

Students should have assignment written or typed out. Teacher will note on roster who has completed assignment.

Number Note!

According to this tutorial, some French speakers (including some Belgians and Swiss) use more logical forms for 70, 80, and 90:

• 70: septante
• 80: huitante
• 90: nonante

{25 minutes} Multiplication Practice!

• First, students pair up. One student picks two numbers between 5 and 15; second student reads the multiplication product from his/her grid. Each student should ask the other five different pairs of numbers.
• After five minutes of pairs practice, teacher goes around room with number cards. (Shuffle them first!) Student draws two cards, multiplies the numbers on them:
• Student says (e.g.) "Sept fois onze: soixante-dix-sept!" (Translation: 7 times 11: 77.)
• Do this with each student. (Students may refer to their homework, but note that the deck includes the numbers 5–20, which is more than they did on their grids!)

{30 minutes} Show and tell review!

• Students pair up! One student says, "Qu'est-ce que tu as dans ton sac à dos?" (What do you have in your backpack?) Other student responds (for example), "J'ai un crayon jaune, un classeur rouge, et une feuille de papier blanche."
• Notice that when we describe things by color in French, the adjective goes after the noun! (Example: Le Moulin Rouge = The Red Mill!)
• After five minutes practicing one-on-one out loud, each pair gets to stand up and present their very brief dialogue. Each student gets to ask; each student gets to answer and show three colorful things.

Les Devoirs: Homework!

1. Write sentences using each of the nouns and adjectives on pp. 124-125!
2. Don't forget the nouns on p. 125 under the numbers! (un portable, un mobile, etc.)
3. Each sentence should start with one of the following:
   1. "J'ai..." (I have...)
   2. "Je veux..." (I want...)
   3. "J'ai besoin de..." (I need... literally I have need of...)
4. Each sentence should then have a noun followed by a color.

CAH will look at these sentences on Tuesday, Jan. 24!

French 2: Jan. 18 Lesson Plan

• Many students switch sections; check your schedules!
  

{40 minutes} L'interface d'un ordinateur! Computer terms!

• Écoutez et répétez!
• Around the room: ask each student "Cliquez sur..."
• Add "Ouvrez un nouvel onglet"; "Fermez l'onglet." (Open a new tab; close the tab!)
  
• Add "faire défiler vers le haut/le bas." (scroll updown!)
  
• Then expand, send students to board to label browser buttons en français!

{20 minutes} Do p. 132, Exercises 21-23 together!

• Students get time to work on each in pairs, then we go through answers in large group.
  

Les Devoirs: Vocab Practice!

1. Take a screen shot of your Web browser. Label at least a dozen different items/icons in French.
2. Write a short "how-to" how to use a laptop computer to research and write a paper.
   1. Start up the computer and the software.
   2. Start up the browser.
   3. Search for information, click on links, maybe download some files....
      
   4. Open your word processor, write, write, write,
      
   5. Save, shut it down (éteindre), take a break...
   6. Reopen, correct, print...

Show these written items to the sub on Friday; be prepared to present the "how-to" essays as skits on Tuesday, January 24!

• Drill new numbers (remind of examples on each page)
• Do some simple math problems, ask for answers in French.

Friday Oral Exams Postponed! Schedule Your Make-up Time!

Mes élèves! Je suis très désolé! I had to step out early today (Friday) due to illness; thus, all oral exams scheduled for today have been postponed!

Semester grades are due Wednesday, January 18, at 8 a.m. We will get all of these quizzes done in time to meet that deadline. I will be available to give you the oral quiz at the following times and places:

• Saturday, January 14, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Spearfish Public Library.
• Sunday, January 15 Update: cancelled! Public library is closed this Sunday!
• Monday, Janaury 16 (in-service day), 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., my classroom.
• Tuesday, January 17, 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., and 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., my classroom.

I'm no more fond of working on the weekend than you are, but we need to get these tests done by the end of the school day Tuesday. We can get these tests done in the times above, but you cannot all wait until Tuesday after school.
