French 1: Tue/Wed October 9/10 2012 Lesson Plan

DUE: Write all vocab terms on pp. 52-55 four times!

[15 minutes] Verb Conjugation Practice! Students write on the board their translations of the eleven sentences from last time (everybody does one sentence; repeats will happen!):

1. I adore French.
2. She sings.
3. Lucas dances.
4. They are eating.
5. We hate the homework.
6. I am drawing.
7. Are you drawing?
8. Jean-Claude speaks French.
9. Rufus and Helga speak English.
10. We are surfing the Internet.
11. Are you surfing in Hawaii?

• CAH checks vocab homework during this time.

[5 minutes] New Vocab: Add these words from Homegrown Vocab List!

• l'amour (m)
• la maison
• le sourire
• la fleur
• heureux/heureuse vs. triste
• le déjeuner (le petit déjeuner, le dîner!)
• CAH will include these words on the Vocab 2.2 Quiz!

[30 minutes] Practice Vocab 2.2

• CAH leads practice: "Tu aimes...?" Students respond "Oui, j'aime..." or "Non, je n'aime pas...."
• Include Entre copains!: bouquiner, zapper, tchatcher
• Drill time phrases: souvent, de temps en temps, rarement, jamais... and add toujours!
• Student survey! Students circulate, ask others "Tu aimes... régulièrement?" with ref. to some specific activity.
• Enter data in Google Docs Shared Spreadsheet!
• Students report their data: Six élèves aiment aller au parc souvent, quatre aiment aller au parc de temps en temps, deux aiment aller au parc rarement, et un n'aime jamais aller au parc."

[20 minutes] Oral Quiz on Numbers 1–30!

• Each student comes out to the hall individually to recite the numbers 1 through 30 in French to CAH (15 points: half point for each number).
• Then CAH flips five quasi-random number cards, students must say each number in French (1 point for each number).

While CAH gives oral quiz on numbers, students work on Les Devoirs!

• Read box on p. 56 explaining Contractions with à.
• Write pp. 56–57, Exs. 27, 28, and 29. Yes, write complete sentences!
• Exercise 28: remember to conjugate the verb!

Shortened Period! 11:30–12:45!

DUE: Les Devoirs! New Vocab! List 2.1, p. 75 (also shown on pp. 44-46)

• Write each job once; then write a sentence (en français!!!) about a person who does that job.
• Par exemple: "Un professeur de français: il aime les élèves et les verbes!"
• Write other verbs/phrases in vocab list four times.
• Don't forget the jobs listed on p. 46!

[30 minutes] More Presentations (as many as fit in this time frame!)

• Everyone reads job sentences out loud! CAH offers questions wherever possible.

[20 minutes] Grammar Review: Future Tense! (p. 48)

• Recall the basic formula: infinitive plus -ai/-as/-a/-ons/-ez/-ont
• Note that -re verbs drop -e first.
• Endings never change, but some verbs have irregular future stems:

Google Translate Freaks Out: Some Odd Translations

In French 1 today, we stumbled upon some interesting quirks in how Google Translate translates some verb phrases from English to French. The discovery inspired me to create a Google Doc to catalog some of the stranger online translations.

French 2: Tuesday October 2 2012

DUE: Translate the following sentences. Et faites attention: you do not have to translate the helping verbs! They are included in the normal French present tense: e.g., "I am reading" translates as "Je lis," not "Je suis* lire*" or some other un-French compounded verb monstrosity!

1. I'm eating a sandwich. I like it.
2. Are you eating an ice cream? Do you like it?
3. That's Bob. Élise is watching him.
4. That's Élise. Bob is watching her.
5. We are waiting for y'all.
6. Are y'all waiting for us?
7. Where are Bob and Élise? I am waiting for them.
8. Where are Élise and Émilie? Jean is waiting for them.
9. My mom loves me.
10. I love her.
11. We love you, Sébastien!
12. Victor loves you, Julienne!
13. My friends! The teacher is listening to y'all!

[25 minutes] Vocab 2.1 Drill and Skit

• 5 minutes: students drill each other in pairs or trios on Vocab on pp. 42–45
• CAH checks homework during this time
• Then students prepare brief skit revolving around preparing for a party or holiday.
• Each student must say four lines.
• Use the vocab!
• Each team presents in class after ten minutes prep/practice.

[10 minutes] Set up Smart Board Sharing Doc for French 2!

[15 minutes] Review Direct Object Pronouns! p. 46

• Students enter their sentences from les devoirs on Smart Board Sharing Doc.
• Highlight all direct object pronouns!
• Review correct translations.
• Ask students to reword sentences for different direct objects.

[25 minutes] Indirect Object Pronouns! p. 48

• Review English grammar: indirect object receives the action: I am baking her a cake!
• Note same forms as direct object pronouns in first and second person (me, te, nous, vous)
• Different in third person: lui and leur
• Order: dictated by form, not function! me-te-nous-vous first, then le-le-l'-les, then lui-leur.
• Practice with CAH sentences on board.

Les Devoirs:

• Review -er verb conjugation pattern ("Every French verb has a six-part chart!")
• Practice together with Exs. 12 and 14
