Les Devoirs: Write 20 original sentences using the -re/-ger/-cer verbs given on pp. 116 & 118!
  • Use each verb once (with the exception of rendre, which gets double duty in the phrase rendre visite à)
  • In each sentence, include either a time or a day of the week!

French 2: Dec 22-Jan 3 Lesson Plan

DUE: Les Devoirs: Translate the following sentences, paying close attention to the use of object pronouns and the agreement between participles and direct object pronouns.
  1. I saw him.
  2. I saw her.
  3. I saw them.
  4. The track? We went there.
  5. The infirmary? Luc stayed there.
  6. The laboratory? She died there.
  7. The competition? Marie won it!
  8. The competition? They lost it.
  9. The quiz (interro)? We took it.
  10. The test (examen)? We took it.

{30 minutes} Review the above translation sentences on the board!
  • Bonus practice: change one word in each of the above sentences, ask students to rewrite sentences on the board to reflect those changes.
  • Perhaps ask students to suggest changes to each sentence!
{10 minutes} Brief review of grammar pages (pp. 36, 72, 112, 148): all fair game for final exam (only first part of 148, on object pronouns and past tense, the grammar we are working on right now)!

{30 minutes} Practice oral exam questions!

French 2: Dec. 20-21 Lesson Plan

DUE: Review passé composé! (past tense!) Translate the following sentences into French. Remember to form the past tense using avoir or être as appropriate!

Examples:
  • I won the contest: J'ai gagné la compétition.
  • My friends went to the supermarket: Mes amis sont allés au supermarché.
For a refresher on the grammar, see pp. 58 & 60. And focus on using vocab from Chapter 4, not Google Translate!

Sentences to translate:
  1. Bob lost his safety glasses.
  2. Rebecca took a test.
  3. Jacques passed his English test. (be sure to use à after réussir)
  4. We went to the gym.
  5. Henri crammed for the biology test.
  6. The girls were in detention.
  7. The boys borrowed twenty-one books from the school library (use the fancy French abbreviation for school library... and spell out the number!)
  8. We completely forgot the party!
  9. After university, Giselle became a nurse.
  10. Camille and Sophie stayed at the lab to finish an experiment.
  11. The French teacher entered the lunchroom. (see this forum discussion of entrer dans and entrer à!)
  12. Did you return your books to the library?

{20 minutes} Review past tense translations!
  • By random draw (Excel!), students place sentences on the board.
{40 minutes} Object pronouns in past tense!
  • Demonstrate placement before auxiliary verb.
  • Convert sentences from translation assignment: #1, 2, 7, 8, 12 go neatly with direct objects.
  • #3, 4, 10, and 11 allow us to use pronoun y to replace phrases starting with à!
  • We don't have any sentences like this above, but we can use en to replace phrases starting with de: Avez-vous des langoustes? Non, je n'en ai pas. Avez-vous vu beaucoup de professeurs? Non, je n'en ai pas vu beaucoup.
  • The kicker: When we add a direct object pronoun, we have to make the past participle verb agree with it.
  • Now this agreement can get confusing: when the past tense is formed with être, the participle as to agree with the subject: il est tombé... elle est tombée... Jean et Luc sont tomb&ecaute;s... Marie et Claire sont tombées!
