Written Final Exam: Final Pre-Cap

Final Exams take place Wednesday, May 22 through Friday, May 24:
  • Wed 5/22 Block 1: French 3, Maroon 1.
  • Wed 5/22 Block 2: French 2, Maroon 2.
  • Wed 5/22 Block 3: French 2, Maroon 3.
  • Wed 5/22 Block 4: free for students, orals for CAH.
  • Thu 5/23 Block 1: free for students, orals for CAH.
  • Thu 5/23 Block 2: students take White 1 exams, CAH grades exams.
  • Thu 5/23 Block 3: French 1, White 2.
  • Thu 5/23 Block 4: free for students, orals for CAH.
  • Fri 5/24 Block 1: French 1, White 3.
  • Fri 5/24 Block 2: French 1, White 4.
Written exams for French 1, 2, and 3 will consist of three sections:
  1. Vocabulary (4 pages)
  2. Verb conjugation (2 pages)
  3. Translation (2 pages)
Vocabulary sections will include 120 words/phrases, with one third from first semester's vocab lists and two thirds from second semester's vocab lists. Students will translate 60 words/phrases from French to English, then 60 words from English to French. 

Verb conjugation sections will test the following verb knowledge:
  1. French 1: present and past tense conjugation (see pages R24–R27).
  2. French 2: present, past, imperfective, and future conjugation (R38–R47)
  3. French 3: present, past imperfective, future, conditional, and subjunctive conjugation (R40–R54).
Translation sections will offer the following challenges:
  1. French 1: Translate 10 sentences from French to English, 10 sentences from English to French.
  2. French 2: Translate 10 sentences from French to English, 10 sentences from English to French.
  3. French 3: Translate 8 passages from assigned news articles from French to English.
Spelling, accent marks, articles, and gender count whenever students are answering in French.

Students must answer 4 out of 5 questions correctly on each page of the written exam to receive full credit for that page. In other words, students may skip 1 out of 5 questions... or guess wildly on 1 out of 5 questions with no penalty for an incorrect response. Students who answer more than 4 out of 5 questions correctly will receive bonus points. One exception: In the French 3 translation, students must translate 3 out of 4 passages on each page.

  • Serreau also composed the original music for this film.
  • A decade earlier, Serreau wrote and directed Trois hommes et un couffin (1985), which was remade in America as Three Men and a Baby (1987).

Extra Credit No, Bonus Points Yes

North Carolina Civics and Econ teacher Mrs. Cook offers in her syllabus this concise explanation of the difference between extra credit and bonus points and the rationale for offering the latter but not the former:
I DO NOT GIVE EXTRA CREDIT! You may be asking yourself “What’s the difference between extra-credit and bonus points?” I will try to clarify for you: Extra credit is more work for me because you chose not to do your part the first time. Bonus points are built in: I may ask an additional question on a quiz or test that can only help you, not count against you. Or we may do an in class activities that allow you or your group to receive some bonus points. The reasoning for my policy is that it is the student’s responsibility to keep up with their work and knowledge throughout the course and not rely on “extra –credit” to help them make it through. My job as an IB teacher is prepare them for college and real world experiences and, most likely, they will not encounter extra-credit after high school [R. Cook, MYP Civics and Economics syllabus, downloaded 2013.05.17].
I follow those principles in my class. Extra credit does not exist in my classroom. However, I set an 80% rule on my final exams: get 4 out of 5 right, and you get full credit. Get more than that right, and you get bonus points.

Put Down the Phone: You Can't Multitask

If you're checking Facebook, you're not studying:
...[E]vidence from psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience suggests that when students multitask while doing schoolwork, their learning is far spottier and shallower than if the work had their full attention. They understand and remember less, and they have greater difficulty transferring their learning to new contexts. So detrimental is this practice that some researchers are proposing that a new prerequisite for academic and even professional success—the new marshmallow test of self-discipline—is the ability to resist a blinking inbox or a buzzing phone [Annie Murphy Paul, "You'll Never Learn!" Slate, 2013.05.03].
You may think you're good at multitasking, but you're wrong:
David Meyer, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan who’s studied the effects of divided attention on learning, takes a firm line on the brain’s ability to multitask: “Under most conditions, the brain simply cannot do two complex tasks at the same time. It can happen only when the two tasks are both very simple and when they don’t compete with each other for the same mental resources. An example would be folding laundry and listening to the weather report on the radio. That’s fine. But listening to a lecture while texting, or doing homework and being on Facebook—each of these tasks is very demanding, and each of them uses the same area of the brain, the prefrontal cortex.”

Young people think they can perform two challenging tasks at once, Meyer acknowledges, but “they are deluded,” he declares. It’s difficult for anyone to properly evaluate how well his or her own mental processes are operating, he points out, because most of these processes are unconscious. And, Meyer adds, “there’s nothing magical about the brains of so-called ‘digital natives’ that keeps them from suffering the inefficiencies of multitasking. They may like to do it, they may even be addicted to it, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s far better to focus on one task from start to finish” [Paul, 2013.05.03].
I find it as hard as my students to resist the urge to check my e-mail and Twitter and run down various info-rabbit holes on Wikipedia and Le Monde and the local news when I have a live computer screen and all those tempting buttons right in front of me. But we mustn't rationalize giving in to our urges under the guise of multitasking. If you're engaging with people on the phone or Facebook, you're not engaging with the people in your classroom or with the book you're supposed to be reading.

Giving someone or something your undivided attention is a valuable and necessary skill. Some things can't be learned in two-minute bursts.

Besides, most calls and texts you receive do not demand your immediate attention. Respect the task at hand or the person you're with by shutting off your phone and other inputs and focusing on that task or that person.

French 3 Oral Final Exam May 2013

The French 3 Oral Final Exam will consist of two parts.

In Part 1, CAH will ask you as many questions from the following list as possible. CAH may skip questions and change their order. You must answer each question with at least one complete sentence. You should also be prepared to answer any follow-up questions that CAH may logically construct from your responses to these questions.

  • Use 7.2 Vocab words in at least ten of your sentences and highlight those vocab words!

  • CAH assigns students to three or four groups (no fewer than four students per group).
  • Students play memory game: first says, "À la grande surface, j'ai acheté..." plus one of our vocab words. Student should say the vocab word loudly and clearly and make some physical gesture indicating what the item is. 
  • Next student says, "À la grande surface, j'ai acheté..." plus the item the first student says, plus a new item, and so on. See how far each group can go by memory!
  • CAH checks homework during this time.
  • Each group recognizes the person who can recall the longest list of items; CAH stages a champions round among those top memorizers in front of class.

Assuming that the board approves moving your last day of class to May 24, here is the snow-revised schedule for the final week of school and final exams:

  • Monday, May 20 will be a normal Maroon day. French 3 and French 2 will enjoy their final review in class.
  • Tuesday, May 21 will be a normal White day. French 1 will enjoy their final review in class.
  • Wednesday, May 22: Maroon 1, 2, and 3 (French 3 and French 2) exams happen at normal class times. 
  • Thursday, May 23: White 1 exams happen during Block 2; White 2 (French 1) exams happen during Block 3.
  • Friday, May 24: White 3 (French 1) exams happen during Block 1; White 4 (French 1) exams happen during Block 2. 
  • You will check-in your laptops after your White 4 exam on Friday, May 24.

DUE: Les Devoirs: Look at the verbs on p. 239, Ex. 31. For each verb, write two original sentences, one saying someone is doing the action (present tense), another saying that same person did the action yesterday (past tense). Use a different subject for each verb. Also include some phrase (direct object, prepositional phrase. In all, you will write nine pairs of sentences, eighteen sentences total.

For example, suppose you have the verb chanter. I want to see two sentences, present and past:
  1. Nous chantons l'hymne nationale au match de basketball.
  2. Nous avons chanté l'hymne nationale au match de basketball.
[10 minutes] Les phrases au tableau! Students write two of their past tense sentences on the board.
  • CAH checks homework for points during this time!
[15 minutes] Oral Vocab Practice: "Qu'est-ce que tu voudrais pour ton anniversaire?" CAH gets question rolling, then students ask each other. Respond using vocab in 7.2 list!

[20 minutes] Review Past Tense -er verbs! Check homework sentences on board. Make sure everyone is using the helping verb-past participle combo!

[30 minutes] Expanding passé composé grammar: -ir and -re verbs! p. 262!
  • Verbs like finir and vendre follow the same helping verb rule as verbs like manger and regarder: conjugate avoir!
  • ...but their past participles have different endings! -ir drop the -r and leave the ending -i; -re verbs drop the -re and add -u!

Prepare a slide show that includes at the very least a map (with French labels!) of where the phenomenon happened, plus 60 seconds of you oral reportage (in French) of the event! No need to memorize; scripts allowed. But do not simply read from the French article you found online; write your own text in French!

Les Devoirs: Write all vocab terms covered on pp. 234–237...
  • ...if the vocab words are pictured on pp. 234–235, write them three times and draw a picture to accompany the word!
  • ...write any non-pictured words and phrases four times.
[5 minutes] Pronunciation warm-up: Students practice new vocab 7.2 in pairs! 
  • CAH checks vocab homework during this time.
[30 minutes] Oral Vocabulary Practice
  • "Qu'est-ce que tu vas acheter pour ta mère/ton père/ton ami...?" (Students respond with an item from our vocab list.)
  • "Combien ça coûte?" (Students respond with their best guess on price, based on a rough conversion of $1.31 to €1.00.)
  • Then do p. 236 Exs. 22 and 24 together orally.
[45 minutes] New Grammar: The Past Tense/passé composé! p.238
  • Put chart on p. 238 on board.
  • Emphasize two parts: conjugate avoir, then add past participle ( in French is like -ed in English).
  • Emphasize pronunciation difference in first-person singluar between present and past.
  • Do Exs. 27, 28, 29, and, as time allows, 30 together in class.
Les Devoirs: Look at the verbs on p. 239, Ex. 31. For each verb, write two original sentences, one saying someone is doing the action (present tense), another saying that same person did the action yesterday (past tense). Use a different subject for each verb. Also include some phrase (direct object, prepositional phrase. In all, you will write nine pairs of sentences, eighteen sentences total.

For example, suppose you have the verb chanter. I want to see two sentences, present and past:
  1. Nous chantons l'hymne nationale au match de basketball.
  2. Nous avons chanté l'hymne nationale au match de basketball.

Les Devoirs: Vocab Writing 10.2, List 10.2, pp. 358–361:  Handwrite each vocab word/phrase four times.

[5 minutes] Written Grammar Warm-up! Each students picks one -er verb, one -ir verb, and one -re verb, conjugates each in the future tense.

[20 minutes] Oral Vocabulary Practice
  • Students pair and practice with each other. One student says, "Je partirai en voyage à..." and finishes the sentence with a country. Partner says, "Avant de partir en voyage, il te faut..." or "Avant de partir, tu dois..." and follows with a word or phrase from our vocabulary. 
  • Then CAH leads same practice with full group. Each student must say something different from immediately preceding student.
  • CAH follows up with vocab-related questions.
[45 minutes] Grammar Practice: More Future!
  • Each student puts one verb from written warm-up on board.
  • Then students ask each other in sequence, "Qu'est-ce que tu feras demain?" Students respond with sentence using one of verbs on board or on own written practice.

  2. Vocab Practice: Each student writes ten sentences about planning for a trip. 
    1. Pick a country and a city therein.
    2. Use at least ten terms from Vocab List 10.2 to tell us what you will do to get ready for the trip. 
    3. Write all ten sentences in the future tense ("I will buy... I will look for....")
