{20 minutes}Relative Pronoun Practice: qui, que, dont! (p. 314) Translate the following sentences:
- We are not watching the movie that came from Dakar.
- We did not watch the movie that you recommended.
- We were not watching the movie you talked about (think: "about which you talked").
- We will not watch the movie whose stars will be here in June.
- The girl whom Claude likes goes to Paris regularly.
- The girl who likes Claude went to the park.
- The girl whom we saw was going to the lake.
- The girl whose book I found will go to the library.
Answers!
- Nous ne regardons pas le film qui est venu de Dakar.
- regardons: present tense
- qui: subject ("the film is coming")
- est venu: past tense of verb of motion uses être as helping verb (p. 60)
- Nous n'avons pas regardé le film que tu as recommandé OR
...que vous avez recommandé. - n'avons pas regardé: regular past tense
- que: direct object ("you recommended the film")
- as recommandé: regular past tense
- Nous ne regardions pas le film dont tu as parlé OR...dont vous avez parlé.
- regardions: imperfect
- dont: "of which" (imagine de + que)
- as parlé: regular past tense
- Nous ne regarderons pas le film dont les vedettes seront ici en juin.
- regarderons: regular future tense
- dont: "whose" (or "of whom")
- seront: irregular future tense
- La fille que Claude aime va à Paris régulièrement.
- que: direct object ("Claude likes her")
- va: irregular present tense
- La fille qui aime Claude est allée au parc.
- qui: subject ("She likes Clause")
- est allée: past tense of verb of motion uses être as helping verb (p. 60); also, when you use être as your past tense helping verb, you have to make the participle agree with the subject.
- La fille que nous avons vue allait au lac.
- que: direct object ("we saw the girl")
- avons vue: irregular past tense (and don't sweat the -e ending here, but know that Rule #3 on p. 314 explains that the past participle has to agree with the direct object pronoun que)
- allait: imperfect
- La fille dont le livre j'ai trouvé ira à la bibliothèque.
- dont: whose
- ai trouvé: regular past tense
- ira: irregular future tense of aller
