How to Make French Special Characters

To produce the following French special characters in Microsoft Word, you can use the following keystrokes. First you press Ctrl and the indicated symbol at the same time. Then release those keys: Ctrl+symbol, followed by letter
  • l'accent aigu (áéíóú): Ctrl+apostrophe, then vowel to be accented
  • l'accent grave (àèìòù): Ctrl+open single quote (key under Esc!), then vowel to be accented
  • l'accent circonflex (âêîôû): Ctrl+Shift+6 (carat!), then vowel to be accented
  • la cédille (ç): Ctrl+comma, then c
  • le tréma (äëïöü): Ctrl+Shift+semicolon (colon!), then vowel to be accented
  • o e collé (œ in cœur, sœur, mœurs, œuf, œuvre, œil): Ctrl+Shift+7 (ampersand!), then o
Update 2012.09.04: My new version of Word 2010 requires me to hit the Ctrl+symbol combo and hold it down while hitting the letter I want to accent. This makes entering a lowercase ô impossible. I have to go to the Insert>Symbol menu to find it... but after I do that, I find Word decides to accept the normal keyboard shortcuts, without having to hold everything down. How strange!

Louise Attaque: J't'emmène au vent

French chanson/folk rock band Louise Attaque released this song, "J't'emmène au vent," on its eponymous debut album in 1997. C'est une bonne chanson!

Allez viens, j't'emmène au vent,
je t'emmène au dessus des gens,
et je voudrais que tu te rappelles,
notre amour est éternel et pas
artificiel

je voudrais que tu te ramènes devant,
que tu sois là de temps en temps
et je voudrais que tu te rappelles
notre amour est éternel

je voudrais que tu m'appelles plus souvent,
que tu prennes parfois les devants
et je voudrais que tu te rappelles
notre amour est éternel
et pas artificiel

je voudrais que tu sois celle que j'entends
allez viens j't'emmène au dessus des gens,
et je voudrais que tu te rappelles,
notre amourette éternelle,
artificielle...

Trema/Diaeresis in English!

We covered the five accent/graphical marks in French today. Le tréma (naïf, Noël, Israël, canoë, coïncider) gets me excited, because it gives me a chance to say diaeresis in class (kids remember these things!). I also dig le tréma because it appears in English as well and thus provides at least a semi-familiar example to show students the exceptional vowel pronunciation the symbol indicates. The obvious example—perhaps the only familiar example— is naïve. But I still recall reading an old edition of some novel and encountering coöoperate... or was it reëlection?

I got to wondering if I could find a list of English words that use the trema. Here are a few from Wikipedia:
  • reënact
  • zoölogy
  • seër
  • Chloë
  • Zoë
  • Brontë
  • Boötes
If you know of any others, do submit!

Les nouveaux mots -- les sports!

In French 2 today, we practiced some French phrases for various activities. We were doing sports: jouer au tennis, au basket-ball, au volley/volleyball, football, au football américain, au golf.... I added faire du cross, knowing it's fall and we have runners (and also wanting to recall my own glory days on the dusty roads of Lake County). We had other pastimes available as well: faire du théâtre, jouer de la musique, faire de la photo, aller au café

We made the rounds with "Qu'est-ce que tu aimes faire?" adding extravagant gestures to help memory and keep the blood pumping. Then I turned to a boy who caught me unprepared. "Wrestling."

Arrgghh! I hadn't looked that up! Shame on me. We looked it up and found la lutte. Now try coming up with a gesture demonstrate that!

Some new sports to include in our vocab:
    • faire de la lutte: wrestle
    • faire de la gymnastique: do gymnastics
    • faire du vélo: go biking
    • jouer à des jeux vidéo: play video games
    • faire du surf des neiges, de la planche à neige: snowboarding
