  • Students present without scripts or notes!
[5 minutes]: Listening Warm-up!
  • CAH gives commands (see list below); students respond by acting out the command.
  • Note that, since CAH is telling the whole class to do something, he uses the vous form of the commands!
[15 minutes] Students present morning/evening routine skits!
  • Each student duo presents at front of class.
  • CAH evaluates on pronunciation and understanding (i.e., does each action match what the speaker says).
[15 minutes] Announce/Explain/Practice Chapter 5 Oral Interview Quiz! Wednesday, February 13!

On Wednesday, February 13, I will ask you one of these two questions:
  • Qu'est-ce que tu as fait hier soir? OR
  • Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ce matin?
You will answer by stating three things that you did, using vocab from Chapter 5. I will then ask a follow-up question to your response. I may ask whether you did another activity; I may ask what you did before or after what you mentioned; I may ask pourquoi? about the activities you mentioned. You need to answer in a complete sentence, not just oui or non.

I will then give you four commands based on the verbs in Chapter 5. You will respond not by speaking but by acting out the action commanded. Possible commands:
  1. lève-toi
  2. réveille-toi
  3. couche-toi
  4. endors-toi
  5. brosse-toi les dents
  6. brosse-toi les cheveux
  7. peigne-toi
  8. coiffe-toi
  9. habille-toi
  10. déshabille-toi (remember, mime it, don't actually do it!)
  11. lave-toi les mains
  12. lave-toi la figure
  13. lave-toi les cheveux
  14. sèche-toi
  15. sèche-toi les mains
  16. sèche-toi les cheveux
  17. sèche-toi les yeux*
  18. maquille-toi avec le rouge à levres
  19. rase-toi
  20. dépêche-toi
*Think about what I'm asking here!

You then ask me two questions—not ça va or comment tu t'appelles or anything else to which you already know the answer, but preferably questions related to Chapter 5 vocabulary. I will respond en français; you will prove you understand my response (probably by translating my statement back into English).
  • Écoutez et répétez!
  • Practice in quartets: students order each other around, act out the specified action.
  • Do one round with all students in large group ordering each other around in sequence.
[15 minutes] Grammar Review: Past Tense! passé composé (pp. 58, 60)

  1. I worked all morning.
  2. You worked all morning.

  4. We waited the whole evening.
  5. You went to all the films.
  6. They entered all the rooms.
  7. All the monsters died.
  8. All the students arrived at 8 o'clock.

  17. You went out to all the parties.
  18. All my brothers were born in winter.
  19. All my sisters were born in summer.
  20. They put all the towels in the bathroom.
  • Remember those verbs that take être in the past tense? Guess what: there are more!
[40 minutes] Reflexive verbs in passé composé (p. 174)
  • Reflexive verbs act like verbs of motion: they all take être in the past tense!
  • One big difference from verbs of motion: the past participle agrees with the subject/reflexive pronoun only if there is not some other direct object (like the teeth being brushed, hair being combed, hands being washed) after the verb.
  • Examples:
    1. Male speaking: Je me suis levé.
    2. Female speaking: Je me suis levée.
    3. Tu t'es rasé?
    4. Marion s'est lavée.
    5. Marion s'est lavé les mains. ("The hands" are a direct object; participle does not change to feminine to agree with subject Marion.)
    6. Nous nous sommes habillés.
    7. Mes filles, vous vous êtes habillées? (extra e and s: feminine plural!)
    8. Les garçons se sont couchés à 10 h.
    9. Les filles se sont brossé les dents. ("The teeth" are direct object, so participle does not agree with subject.)
  • Do p. 174, Ex. 27 together in class

[20 minutes] New Grammar: The Conditional!
  • See page R51 for chart!
  • The conditional in French is the "would" form of a verb.
  • The French use the conditional just as we do: either to express something that would happen if certain conditions were true, and to make a request more polite.
  • The conditional forms pretty simply: just add the imperfect ending to the future stem:
    1. J'aimerais devenir professeur—"I'd like to become a teacher."
    2. Tu m'aiderais avec les devoirs?—"Would you help me with the homework?"
    3. Hannah pourrait parler avec le prof?"Could Hannah speak to the teacher?" (pouvoir has an irregular future root, pourr-. "could" = "would be able to")
    4. Nous irions aller au stade, mais il va pleuvoir"We would go to the stadium, but it's going to rain."
    5. Vous arrêteriez de fumer?"Would you stop smoking?"

We'll hammer on the grammar later; for now, just remember that, if you're getting up, washing yourself, or getting your clothes or make-up on, you're going to say me after your je.

French 3 Playlist: Lyrics for the Semester Written Exam

Update 2013.01.11 13:20 MST: Mes amis! Je regrette, que nous n'avons pas de classe aujourd'hui. Voici quelques informations très important!

I have printed the final exam. On it, I include passages from the following songs:
  1. Aïcha
  2. Avec le vent
  3. Echo
  4. Elle me dit
  5. La route de la paix
  6. Le jour après la fin du monde
Plastic Bertrand's "Ça plane pour moi" is just too crazy and disconnected and Eiffel's "Place de mon cœur" felt just a little too abstract for this translation test.

I am taking the passages for translation from the first half or first couple verses of each song (plus the chorus, the repeated part). Note that "La route de la paix" really just has two verses along with its chorus.

Below is a YouTube playlist of the nine Francophone artists/songs French 3 students chose to present in class:

On the written final, CAH will give you passages from each song and ask you to translate those lyrics into English. Preserving meaning is important; preserving rhyme is an optional poetic challenge.

1. Cheb Khaled, "Aïcha," Sahra, 1996

2. Anggun, "Echo (You and I)" Eurovision, 2012 (lyrics also here)
You and I, you and I

J'entends l'écho de nos pas
Tous en cadence
Marche au pas
Jamais dans le même sens
On avance mais on court après quoi ?

J'entends l'écho de nos rêves,de nos envies
Au delà du jour, jusqu'à la nuit
On s'entraine et on court après quoi ?
On se perd, on s'espère
Quelque part on s'égare
Un jour au delà
On se retrouvera

In my dreams, in my dreams
In my heart, in my mind
There is you and I, there is you and I

J'entends l'écho de nos pas qui se balancent
Ça et là
Toujours sur la même danse
On avance mais on court après quoi ?

On se perd, on s'espère
Quelque part on s'égare
Un jour au delà
On se retrouvera

In my dreams, in my dreams
In my heart, in my mind
There is you and I, there is you and I
Ahh...

There is you and I, there is you and I

J'entends l'écho de ta voix s'éloigner de moi
L'écho d'un amour
Un jour reviendra, il montera
Et je cours après quoi ?

On se perd, on s'espère
Quelque part on s'égare
Un jour au delà
On se retrouvera

In my dreams, in my dreams
In my heart, in my mind
There is you and I, there is you and I
